When you put sporting events, the Royal Livestock Show, and UIL Academic District all in one week, our students and coaches rise to the occasion. Many UIL Academics team members competed in multiple activities and were able to help bring home recognitions for our team.

Monday started the week off in Needville with our Literary Criticism team winning first place in district. The week was just the start for horticulture competitor and senior Vladimir Moreno. His 3rd place finish in Literary Criticism was followed by competitions in Headline Writing on Thursday and competitions in Number Sense, Calculator Applications, and Mathematics on Friday. Vladimir will represent our school at Regionals in Corpus Christi competing in not only Literary Criticism but also Calculator Applications, and Mathematics.
Junior Danahe Alcantar spent Wednesday night at a tennis tournament until after 11 PM and then was up for a 6:30 AM departure for journalism contests. As a first-time competitor, she brought home medals in Feature Writing and News Writing. She qualified for regional competition in news writing as the first alternate with a 4th place finish.
The stories of success are endless. From personal bests by science team members like junior Asahn Antonio, a fifth place finish in Poetry Interpretation by senior Cynthia Rivera, and first-time competitor and placer in two events- junior Monica Aguinaga.
In all, our 34 competitors had 13 members qualify for Regionals in a total of 24 competitions. Our journalism students compete individually but were able to, when combined, bring home the journalism team award for a second year in a row. This year our district team placed 3rd overall with a huge gap between our total points of 365 and the 4th place schoolโs score of 135.
The successes and growth of our team comes from the continued hard work of our students and also our coaches, including Mr. Ivan Arteaga, Dr. Enos Inniss, Mrs. Lisa Inniss, Mr. Robert Jones, Mr. Johnathon Venable, Mrs. Veronica Webb, volunteer coach Ms. Laray Odum, and volunteer coach Mr. Junior McKay. Practices began in October after we returned from the Student Activities Conference in Austin and continue on as we prepare for Regionals and beyond.
Congratulations to our entire District Team:
