The Royal SkillsUSA competed Friday, February 28 and Saturday 29, at the District 9 SkillsUSA Competition at Texas State Technical College in Rosenburg, Texas. Royal came away with many medals and trophies! In all, a total of 28 Royal High School Career and Technical Education students have qualified for the State Competition in Corpus Christi, April 2-5.
The Cosmetology Department had many members advanced to the state level! Many students received “Superior Excellent” ratings in their manikin hair and makeup job exhibits advancing them to state. They are as follows, Brooke Venson, Avainia Rogers, Andrea Gomez, Yajaira Salaza, Berta Salazar, Paola Salazar, Lesly Gonzalez, Emily Saldana, Valeria Sanchez, Naileah Guerrero, Noemi Nino, Sandra Aguirre, and Margarita Zavala. Also, Cosmetology competed in the Esthetics Competition, Yajaira Salazar won second place advancing her to the state level for the second time in a row. In the 3D Nail Art, Berta Salazar won the first place gold medal and in the Cosmetology contest, Andrea Gomez brought home the first place gold medal! A total of 15 Cosmetology members will be representing Royal at the state level this year! Congratulations to these girls, the entire Royal family is very proud of their hard work!
The Royal Welding Department had members also advance to the state level over the weekend. The Welding Job Exhibit shown was a custom 3D cube table project designed and fabricated by Joanna Oviedo. This table qualified to state with her craftsmanship and hard work. Also Christan Nino qualified his custom made welding table to the state level. In the Welding 2 competition David Aguilar received second place, and Joanna received third place. The Welding Department also competed in Welding 1 competition with Cristian Nino placing first and Lacey Taylor placing second, making them eligible for the state competition. Great job, welding department!
The Royal Machining Department also had a great weekend at District competition advancing Joel Patino to the state competition. The Precision Machine Job Exhibit, which was of a custom-made machined tape dispenser, received “Superior Rating”, making Joel eligible to advance to state competition. Well done, machining department!
The Arts, Audio Visual Department is successfully returning some of its members to the state level, after receiving second place out of 14 teams from around the district in the General Quiz Bowl Competition. For the eight consecutive year, team members Lissy Gonzalez, Melani Alanis, Trinity Bluford, Alexiz Ibarra, and Alondra Melendez will be representing Royal Arts, A/V at the State competition. Also, Trinity Bluford received second place out of twenty individuals in the Extemporaneous Speaking contest. Each of these five members will represent the Royal Audio Visual Department at the state competition! Good luck team at State in Corpus Christi!
The Health Science Department made school history over the weekend! For the first time in program history, the health science department competed with teams at district and is advancing students to the state level. In the Health Science Knowledge Bowl, Lorelei Garcia, Gavin Lennox, Natalie Sayon, and Perry Matias all received second place advancing to state. Great job team. Lorelei Garcia also placed 2nd in Medical Terminology and is advancing to state. She also exhibited a job skill poster that received state qualification. Also, congratulations to Hannah Simons for placing second in the Medical Math contest, she will be advancing to the state contest in Corpus Christi. Great job, health science department in making program history!
The Royal SkillsUSA advisors would like to congratulate all these students on their respective accomplishments and a job well done representing Royal High School Career and Technical Education Department at the District 9 SkillsUSA Contest! A special thanks to Royal SkillsUSA Advisors, Mrs. Sandra Olison and Mr. Ceasar Gonzalez in helping with students projects and judging with various contest. Please take the time to wish these 28 students good luck, as they prepare for the State Competitions in Corpus Christi, Texas, April 2-5.
